Original watercolor concept art by PES for Submarine Sandwich.

PES has stated that the idea for Submarine Sandwich first came to him when he saw a Hobart 410 "Streamliner" deli slicer (from the 1940s) on a pedestal in an exhibit of Industrial Design at the Museum of Modern Art.  This led directly to the idea of using a boxing glove, knuckles to the blade, as the meat (more specifically, the Italian Ham) in the film.   PES says, "I built the entire film around the core image of that deli slicer with a boxing glove in it.  Concepts for my films often start with a single image that I can't get out of my head and so I decide to make a film so that I can stop thinking about it."

This concept art piece clearly shows that the idea of what to use as the sliced boxing glove in the film (ultimately pink doilies) was not decided until a later date.

Watercolor.  8" x 10" inches.  Signed by PES in lower right.
